At the beginning of the counseling session, I kept on thinking whether it was possible for the client to understand the skills and techniques applied at the meeting. It was surprising for me to click instantly with the client and I noted that she was introverted. I became interested in showing her there is hope and that she could continue working with me. During the session, I applied the clarification and questioning skills in a particular way. I would often repeat a statement and rephrase it then ask whether I was getting the same thing as what the client intended to express. The approach was my version of applying reflective listening skills. I also paid attention to what the client was saying. I communicated my active listening by nodding and adding confirmatory words and phrases when she was talking. My body language to show that client that I was listening included an upright-seated position with my hands relaxed and my head nodding while I looked at the client as she talked.

The following is an account of how I helped the client identify a cognitive distortion. The client noted that her daughter might not be showing any love for her anymore. The client came up with the conclusion on her own based on the behavior of the daughter and the client’s interpretation of the response. She began feeling angry with herself for failing to be there for her daughter. I told the client that her assumptions might be accurate. I also reminded her that there were other possible ways of interpreting the same reported facts. The client accepted the suggestion and confirmed that maybe there might be different ways of looking at the issue. She also noted that her daughter had expressed love towards her in the past week by coming to her room and tacking the client in bed while she was asleep.
