            Very few people have the luxury of being their true selves at work, during social interactions, and relationships. Consequentially, human beings find themselves performing what Arlie Russell Hoschchild terms as emotional labor in an attempt to keep their jobs and relationships in order. Emotional labor characterizes our everyday lives whereby we have to occasionally smile and maintain a polite conversation with others to avoid hurting their feelings or we must perform certain roles because they are expected of our gender. No one is exempt from performing emotional labor in their workplaces, relationships, and within a social setting.

            Hoschchild developed the concept of emotional labor to describe the process by which individuals are required to manage their emotions in accordance with social norms and organizational guidelines and rules. She used the example of services workers like waiters and flight attendants whose job responsibilities necessitate that they should be cheerful and polite to provide the ultimate customer service experience (Mastracci, Newman, and Guy 128). On many occasions, the services workers have to bear with insults, rude remarks, anger, and inappropriate advances so that they can keep their bosses and customers happy. The services employees are expected to regulate their feelings and portray contextually appropriate and pre-established emotions as per the culture and norms of the organization.
