  1. This week you are reading about encounters between Europeans and non-Europeans from the perspective of both groups. How do the documents reflect acceptance of or resistance to cultural differences from each perspective?

The journal of Vasco da Gama in India shows the attitudes of Europeans and their non-European counterparts towards each other’s cultures. It comes out that Europeans were not ready to accept the cultures of the Indians. On the other hand, Indians were not willing to accept the ideas of the Europeans. It comes out that Indians attacked Vasco Da Gama and injured one person among his crew. It is evident that Vasco Da Gama spoke in a way to show that he looked down upon the Indians. He describes Indians as individuals of “little spirit.”[1] The natives of India on the other hand expressed their suspicion of the Europeans. They did not trust them since their discomfort around the latter was expressed. In light of the source, it is evident that the groups did not fully accept each other’s character.

In light of the journal by Christopher Columbus, it comes out that Europeans and Non-Europeans reacted differently in diverse circumstances.
