Release time is the time set aside during school hours for students to receive private religious education. On the other hand leisure time is the free time spent away from work, business or domestic chores.  Leisure emphasizes freedom and choice because during this time one can relax or engage in a hobby of choice. The distinction of the two terms is vital to the African American participation in sports during slavery because the blacks’ leisure time was used differently from that of whites. Release time did not offer students choices on the hobbies to engage. The program was set by the school, and the children required permission from their parents. Therefore their leisure time was used in productive areas of studying.

Historically, the upper classes were the whites and had the privilege to enjoy leisure compared to the black Americans who were slaves and had little leisure time. They chose what they wanted to do during this time and nurtured their talents in sports. The blacks did not have much leisure time because the whites controlled their schedules (Wiggins and Miller, 7). They worked as slaves, and the only free time they had, they went for hunting activities.  Their leisure time was mostly dependent on the choices of their bosses. Additionally, they lived in isolated places that could not allow them to participate in different sporting activities.
