Craig explains addiction as a process, and this has made it easier for people to understand dependency, which has had a significant impact in helping people get through the addiction processes. According to Craig, addiction follows several stages until a person becomes thoroughly addicted to drugs and other substances. Craig also brings out the facts that make us understand addiction as a process where one develops a weakness of finding it hard to live without what was previously seen to bring peace and happiness to their lives. Addiction is a continuous process that cannot be realized quickly as it begins as an unclear process which must have a final stage. To get away from the addiction, the addicts involve themselves in other activities that they believe brings them the mood that they desire (Nakken 50).

Craig discusses the three stages that addicts go through, which include the internal change, lifestyle change, and the life breakdown stage. The internal phase begins when a victim involves themselves in an activity that they believe they can be able to control, as well as bring them the mood that they crave. The lifestyle change stage begins with the addicts changing their lifestyle to fit their comfort zones that are dominated by drug abuse. The last stage (breakdown stage) is realized when the victim finally breaks down as a result of treating themselves as objects.
