Benjamin Franklin established the library in Philadelphia by starting a public nature project where people would subscribe. The idea began with sharing books where some club members would pitch their books to allow others to have access to them. When the project failed, he continued with the mission on his own. “And now I set on foot my first project of a public nature, that for a subscription library,” (Franklin, Chapter 8). Franklin started a company in which he drew a proposal where members would subscribe with forty shillings. The money was used to buy books and maintain the library space. Fifty members endorsed and they promised to contribute ten more shillings annually to make sure that the library had additional books.  The members had a common objective which was supporting the common good.

The library was helpful to Ben and the community in which they had access to books. It provided an opportunity for the community to exchange books and have a continuous process of reading. The community members were enlightened through reading and as a result, they acquired essential knowledge. Additionally, the library created job opportunities for the community members, giving financial stability to the people. On the other hand, Franklin became a permanent employee in the community. He also had a chance to obtain more knowledge from books and practice his hobby of reading. The library provided an opportunity for the community to engage with one another (Franklin, Chapter 8). The members read the books of their colleagues, and they could ask relevant questions from the authors, which was an excellent way of enhancing academic disclosure.
