Bioethics Article Review

The issue presented in the article by Jane Ridley is that of a mom, desperate to give her son a little brother, wishing to trade her only girl embryo for a boy after years of failed IVF. The mom, known only as Lisa, has grappled with infertility issues for nearly a decade and now wants to exchange her only remaining after several failed rounds of IVF so that she can get a boy who can play with her only son, Daniel. According to Rildey (2018), Lisa's request looking to trade embryos with another mom presents a controversial issue which experts say means she is a wading into a legal territory colored in shades of grey. She is looking for would-be-parents who are willing to take the female embryo she is holding at a facility clinic, but who lack a male to exchange.  What complicates things is the fact that her husband and her are hellbent on getting a boy and have spent a lot of money through several rounds of IVF which failed.

The importance of this issue is that it represents something that is a concern for many moms who desire to have babies with specific genders but cannot do so due to infertility issues. The issue of infertility is a common one due to medical complications such as testicular cancer in males which prevents them from siring babies. Hence, through such an exchange of embryos, one can be able to get their desired baby with the particular gender they are looking for. However, being a new and unexplored issue in bioethics, it presents various legal and ethical challenges which may one day have to be determined by courts. The implication of this issue is that if the mom's request is permitted or successful and its legality or ethicality not challenged by anyone, it may open a floodgate of such requests in future, hence leading to many other moms with infertility issues seeking to exchange embryos. ...................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
