Police officers play important roles in the criminal justice system and in the society in general. They not only maintain law and order to avoid chaos and violence but also help protect people and their properties. However, not all law enforcement officers have the kind of qualities that the society expects of them and not every police officer's conduct eschews those attributes that the is expected from them as criminal justice professionals and as custodians of the society's safety. Hence, there are certain characteristics that a police officer should have. The thesis of this paper is that the main attributes that police officer should have are communication skills, integrity, empathy and compassion, negotiation skills, physical and mental fitness, readiness to learn new things, mental agility, knowledge of the law, and respect for the rule of law and human rights and hence when hiring, law enforcement agencies should look out specifically for these features in candidates.
Integrity is the quality of being honest and trustworthy. Arguably, it is the most important attribute that all police officers must have to effective at their job. One of the reasons integrity is a fundamental trait that the public demands from law enforcement officers is that it helps prevent issues and ills or misconduct by the police such as engaging in corruption, bribery, evidence tampering or concealment, and use of excessive force against civilians and violation of human rights through torture and other illegal techniques. Officers with integrity always stand for the truth and will go out of their ways to expose ills within the police force or service.
