Classical period was a significant moment in the field of scientific discovery and philosophical Enlightenment in Europe. Historically, classical period refers to the “The Age of Revolution” and “The Age of Reason” (Wylie 2). During the classical era, social order, which was deeply entrenched in the European societies for centuries, conked out and music was no longer perceived as an exclusive art of pampering the monarchs and high ranking members of clergy. Music in the Classical era was described as formal, elegant, and restrained. This paradigm shift in social context was accredited four artists who were referred as “Classical composers”— Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, and Mozart (Lesser 1). The middle class began to challenge the old paragons that were entrenched on the church and monarchy. Exceptional talents and great minds were no longer excluded to aristocracy but were also in possession of the layman.
Specifically, and most significantly, the Classical age of music was different from the Baroque age in terms of attitude of music. Due to the growing demand of ‘naturalness’ in music, composers in the Classical era were prompted to compose music with less complex ornamentation and technical compilation. If necessary, creation of ornamentation was only to be used in complementing the natural melodic lyrics. Besides symbolizing nobility, music was an element of entertainment, but within accepted boundary of tastefulness. By 1730s, compositions of “the sonatas of C.P.E. Bach” and “the operas of Giovanni Pergolesi” were written in a style galant— a French term for good taste of music done in a modern fashion (Lesser 3).
