Phil Spector, Leiber and Stoller are known to be legendary producers working mainly on Rhythm and Blues and Rock and Roll musical genres. This paper will put their work into perspective and compare the different styles. Leiber and Stoller wrote songs and produced them alongside the Drifters and the Coasters (Esposito, 2015). Checking on the different styles of production between these producers, we shall concentrate on the musical instruments, techniques of singing and dynamism in the voicing and mostly distinguishing what makes up the music.
Leiber and Stoller composed and produced songs like ‘Stand By Me’ in 1961, rising to number one in the rhythm and blues chart and appeared in the top ten twice in the pop chart. The music produced is clear, and the instruments are well coordinated. The producers have used several instruments including piano, guitar, trumpets, tambourine, and violin (Esposito, 2015). These instruments do not all appear at once but come at different times producing a sweet musical sensation.
Leiber and Stoller influenced many songs including a song earlier meant for the Crystals which they brought to them for rewriting. The song gained its fame among the people with more covers than any other song in 1963. The music is well coordinated with clear vocals and wonderful instrument accompaniment. From the song, one can hear a number of songs including a lead and bass guitars, violins, trumpets, piano, and drums.
Phil Spector, a writer, and producer, majored on Rock and Roll songs with most of his pieces finding their way to the top of the pop charts. The song ‘Be My Baby’ produced in 1963 was number four in the UK charts position two in the pop charts (MacLeod, 2017). The song has the drums louder than all other instruments.
