Humans across the world experience various crises that require counseling, to help them cope with their situations. Maslow's hierarchy of needs is a fundamental tool that helps help providers determine the primary needs to be taken care of, thus informing their course of action. South Sudan recently experience massive flooding that displaced people from their homes. The situation in South Sudan required psychological expertise to help the victims recover from the crisis, as discussed in the following paragraphs.
In October 2019, Aljazeera reported that approximately 1 million people were victims of massive floods in South Sudan. Various areas in South Sudan experienced massive flooding that submerged entire communities, forcing people out of their homes. The situation in South Sudan was a great concern as the rains continued to cause havoc for more than a month hence putting more people at risk. The floods have limited access to health facilities, nutrition centers, and essential services and markets. According to Aljazeera (2019), most of the affected areas already experienced humanitarian needs before the floods started, with approximately 60% of the population recorded to be experiencing elevated levels of malnutrition.
Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
Maslow's hierarchy of needs theory argues that people get inspired to achieve particular needs with some needs taking precedence of others. The most basic requirements for a human being, according to the theory, are the physiological needs followed by safety, love, and belonging, esteem. Finally, self-actualization needs (Cherry, 2014). Physiological needs include food, shelter, air, clothing, warmth, sex, and sleep. Safety needs, on the other hand, entail protection from external elements, order, law stability, and freedom from threats. Closely, after safety needs comes to love and belonging, which involves social belonging and relationships. Esteem needs have two categories, namely personal esteem and the desire for reputation.
