Critical Theory, Legitimization Crisis, and the Deindustrialization of Flint, Michigan Assignment

The main idea of the reading is that capitalism is the genesis of deindustrialization and the legitimization crisis which led to the fall of the once economically sound town, Flint. The focus of this paper will be on how the ideas presented in the readings influence the people in Michigan to view the experiences and the social world in a different way. The discussion will include the application of legitimation crisis theory of Jürgen Habermas to the phenomenon of deindustrialization in Flint, Michigan. Besides, the change of capitalist society will be explored by the use of Marx's original theory of capitalist economic crisis. Flint has many industries and hence source of employment to several people. Sigmund Freud and Karl Marx are credited for being the founders of critical theory. Sigmund Freud came up with the talking cure as a way of treating people with psychological illness. Freud saw people has as being instrumental in their cures whereas Marx too viewed the early industrial working class to be a political force for social revolution.

Currently, Flint is undergoing deindustrialization as well as economic depression. There is capitalism in Flint due to laissez-faire where there was freedom to run private businesses and hence the industrial revolution between 1900 and 1930.  The economic developments in Flint included Fisher Body, Chevrolet, Buick, AC Sparkplug, Cadillac, and DuPont.
