Defense Mechanisms Assignment
Defense Mechanisms Paper
A defense mechanism can be defined as an unconscious psychological mechanism that decreases anxiety rising from undesirable or potentially damaging inducements. Defense mechanisms might come from a healthy or unhealthy moment reliant on the situations and the regularity with which the mechanism is utilized.
I remember one day I had a very bad day at work where my boss kept on yelling at me and giving me a really hard time when doing my work. It was a very stressing day for me and when I got home I unconsciously started yelling at my young brother for no apparent reason when he asked me about anything. This is the type of defense mechanism called a displacement defense mechanism (Cramer). In this mechanism, individual taps into the displacement consciousness, then transfer their sentiments from the individual or condition that is the target of their frustration to somebody or something else completely. Subconsciously, they believe that to challenge the cause of their feelings might be too precarious or unsafe and so they shift the attention toward another person or condition that is less threatening or unsafe. Although yelling at my brother helped me calm down, it did not help me handle the emotions I was going through, and I ended up hurting my brother who was completely innocent. It’s healthier to confront the problem head-on with the individual you’re essentially upset with.
Another incidence I used defense mechanism was some years back when I had a gambling problem. I could bet on anything with my friends and ending up losing much of my lunch money on such betting’s. I kept convincing myself that I and my friends were just having fun when making such bets. This form of defense mechanism is known as a denial mechanism and it occurs when a condition or fact turn out to be too much to bear and just refuse to face it (Cramer). By refuting reality, one is basically protecting themselves from having to deal with the unfriendly consequences and discomfort that go with the acceptance. By refusing to accept my gambling problem I was only protecting myself from confronting my bad behavior. And although been in denial alleviated any of my temporary pain, in the end, it almost prevented me from making any positive change out of the situation.....................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
