The district of Columbia Police department is the chief law and order maintenance force in Washington D.C. The force serves the capital of the United States after its establishment in 1861. There exist an opportunity for public safety change in the work station. The District of Columbia police department must ensure that its positions are not received by white officers instead of their African American counterparts so as to better deal with racism barriers to its services.

The possible change exists in the area of dealing with racism. It comes out that there is a history in the District of Columbia Police department as far as the issue of racism applies. The organization has maintained an African American majority of officers since 1998 (Retting & Farmer, 2003). Washington D.C has witnessed racial discrimination whereby many African Americans died in the hands of a white police force. The victims were mainly targeted during the drug violence of the 1970s. Therefore, the city ensured that the police force was dominated by African American personnel.

The city’s dictate of maintaining a large force of African Americans did not come through an easy process. It took sacrifice and a lot of follow up from African American groups to ensure that the city maintained the proposed officers. The city must ensure that African Americans hold the most positions in the police department as a public safety change (Rudd, 2016). Recently, there have been complaints that the city’s police force is increasing the number of white officers at a high rate. The issue should be reversed by ensuring that African Americans are employed in the force at a higher rate.
