Elder Abuse Assignment

The elderly undergo abuse in their own homes, relatives’ homes, and nursing homes. Elderly people can be too frail to rebuke abuse. Caregivers can also take advantage of the elders’ deteriorated sight and hearing. This paper explains two common forms of elder abuse, how to abolish them, and the challenges involved.

Neglect is the most common elder abuse. Neglect is very crucial because it constitutes more than 50% of reported cases of elder abuse (Robinson, 2017). Neglect refers to the intentional or unintentional failure to provide care for an elderly person. The signs of elder neglect include malnutrition, sudden weight loss, unbearable living conditions without lighting, air conditioning, or running water, dirty clothes or body, untreated injuries, and desertion in public.

Physical elder abuse is also crucial because it deteriorates both the physical and mental health of the elderly. Physical abuse is accompanied by emotional abuse which involves bullying, threatening, and controlling. Signs of physical abuse include broken glasses, signs of injury such as bruises, and signs of restraint such as rope marks on ankles and wrists (Robinson, 2017).

The challenge in abolishing physical elder abuse is that the elders like to conceal abuse most likely due to threats from the abuser. The second challenge is that signs of abuse may appear as normal signs of aging. For example, mumbling, suckling, and inability to explain signs of injury may appear as signs of dementia. The third obstacle is the caregivers. The caregivers can deny access to abused elder with excuses such as “she is sleeping or does not require disturbance”.

The first step to abolition of elder abuse is education and training of the public, caregivers, and the elders. The public should be educated on how to spot and report elder abuse through hot lines. The elderly should be empowered on how to seek help for instance through helplines. Caregivers should be trained on stress management and handling the elderly.................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
