What the Emmett Till case illustrates about the role of criminal justice professionals is that they are charged with the role of ensuring that justice is done and that the court is informed of the truth so that it can come to a fair and just decision. However, the case also shows that at times, criminal justice professionals can pervert the cause of justice by failing to properly perform their roles. For instance, in this case, the defense was aware of evidence incriminating their clients, Bryant and Milam, but failed to bring this to the attention of the court or share it with the court. As a result, the persons responsible for Emmet Till's death were never brought to book and held responsible or accountable for their crime. Further, what the case illustrates about the operation of the criminal justice court system is that the system can at times promote injustice due to rules of evidence and procedure. For instance, in this case, even though new evidence came to light concerning Emmet's death, the state could not charge the real suspects due to the rule against double jeopardy.
Based on the analysis of the Emmet Till case, there is a need for larger, systemic reforms of the criminal justice system and the criminal justice profession. The case illustrates how racism and racial discrimination seem to be institutionalized and condoned within the criminal justice system since an all-white juror was constituted to hear the case of a Black victim in which all defendants are white.
