English Colonization and the Road to Revolution Essay
Primary Source A: Backus, I. (1999). An appeal to the public for religious liberty
Backus converted to Christianity in 1741 and became a pastor in 1751 of Baptist church middle borough Massachusetts. He was a leading orator of the American Revolution and published the sermon in 1773 that scrutinized religious liberty. In this source, the author calls for the separation of the church and state. The government required that all Baptists and non-Congregationalists to pay taxes to support a church that it had established (Backus, 1999). Backus viewed this move as an offence against liberty and as a plan by the government to extort from poor Christians. He, therefore, concluded that real freedom did not exist in Massachusetts because the constitution was making the majority of people to assume God’s judgment seat. The idea articulated in this source is that man should have true liberty which comes by being obedient to his creator and enjoying happiness with his fellow creators. Matters of religious faith should not be confounded with government issues. While it is alright to respect the law of the government, the same law interferes with liberty.
The main reason of the author creating this source was to appeal for the separation of the civil and ecclesiastical government so that man could enjoy true liberty.
Primary Source B: A peace sect wrestles with the problem of hiring a substitute. (2002)
Peter Brock came from a military family and specialized in the history of pacificism and Eastern Europe. He was a conscientious objector during the civil war which resulted in his brief imprisonment. The main idea presented in the author’s documentary is the refusal of Americans into military service on the grounds of conscience which was centrally driven by their religion (Norton et al., 2014)................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
