The authors investigate the spatial aspects of violence in Mexico by examining the presence of spatial diffusion patterns relating to the rise in homicides. The study was informed by the dramatic increase in the rates of violence in Mexico in the early 2000s. The researchers made use of exploratory data analysis in measuring the extent of violence in specific municipalities in Mexico and how the increase in violent crime has contagiously diffused to other municipalities.   Furthermore, Flores and Villarreal (2015) set out to determine some of the factors which are responsible for the contagious diffusion of homicides across municipalities in Mexico. Also, the study explored data from different municipalities to determine the rates of violent crimes such as homicides in these areas. 

Their main finding was that there was spatial clustering of acts of violence in specific municipalities and the diffusion of these crimes to other neighboring cities. They also found that most scenarios of violent crime were registered in those areas where drug trafficking activities and gangs are prevalent. One of the implications of their findings is that the policies and strategies used by law enforcement in these areas under study were less effective in restraining violence levels and incidences.
