There are families that live below the federal government’s economic threshold. Income per household in the United States is linked with the feeding habits of citizens.

21% of United States children live below the poverty line. They come from low-income backgrounds. The families cannot afford to handle their basic household needs on a consistent basis. The total number of the children is about fifteen million (Counihan & Van Esterik, 2012). Their parents do not have stable incomes and hence the struggle to afford good food.

The United States can be compared to different world nations when it comes to poverty. The nation has the highest poverty levels among the rich nations of the world. The other nations can afford good food for their populations as opposed to the United States (Gabaccia A & Gabaccia B, 2009). When it comes to foodways, it is evident that economic abundance guarantees good food.

Poverty impairs the decisions of parents when it comes to monitoring the quality of food consumed by their children. It comes out that low-income families eat processed foods to a large extent. The reason is because the foods are cheaper than their healthy counterparts. In the culture of the United States, healthy and unhealthy foods are largely linked to families’ eating habits (Gabaccia A & Gabaccia B, 2009).
