Freedom of speech is important in a workplace. Every worker must receive the chance to express his/her ideas. Companies are restrained by the law when it comes to firing people unjustifiably. It is important to understand that in as much as employers are powerful; workers deserve respect when it comes to hiring and firing.

The course videos explore scenarios where people were fired for different reasons. Some reasons were genuine while others were not. The company which fired an employee for participating in a political election was wrong. The entity should have allowed the individual to express his right of expression without a hindrance (Barrett, 2018). On the other hand, the entity that fired a police officer for posting sexually explicit material on the internet was justified (Barry B 2, 2008). The act could have tarnished the name of the force.

There are standards by which an employer can limit an employee’s expression. An individual should ensure that he/she is in line with a company’s regulations (Barry B 1, 2007). Expressions that could hinder the development of a company should be limited. Companies should only limit expressions that promote hatred. If an individual expresses racist remarks or insults, he/she should be dismissed. It is important to ensure that people learn to respect each other.

Companies must also ensure that they maintain their standards. It is important that they curtail the conduction of campaigns by employees. The idea could bring about resentment between employees with differing political ideologies. Lastly, companies must ensure that decency undergoes maintenance (Olson, 2018). Employees must always portray a good image as long as they represent a company.

Freedom of speech is a mandatory provision in a workplace. People cannot work effectively if their expression is curtailed. However, not all forms of expression should be allowed.
