Islam and the West Assignment

Islam scares many Westerners. The fear of Islam is evident from the emergence of anti-immigrant populism in developed nations to control Muslims. For instance, President Donald Trump recently banned immigrants from Muslim-majority countries and France and other Christian-led institutions have banned the adornment of face and head coverings by Muslims. Jihadists have over the years killed in the name of the religion, which thus places it as the epicenter of extremism and terrorism. The Westerners may also associate negative perspectives with the Islamic traditions and laws, such as the subordination of women and authoritarian governments (Cohen). It is thus evident that a complex relationship exists between Islam and the West. Based on the readings, the conflict between the regions dates back to many decades and centuries ago and can be explained through the Quran and other Islamic texts that provide accounts of the rise of Islam.

The Jihadists are part of the reason that Islam and the West do not get along, aside from the sharp differences in political, social, and financial structures (PBS Frontline). According to TS (Islamic Religious Practices), Islam has a lengthy history of military conquests that date back to its founder Muhammad who faced opposition from both Muslims and Christians (19). As a result, the concept of Jihads arose as the Muslims worked to expand their Arab Empire and religion during the Holy War. They believed that Allah had given them the mandate of subduing unbelievers. The Quran highlights in Sura 2:190, “Fight for the sake of Allah those that fight against you, but do not attack them first. Allah does not love the aggressors” (TS: Islamic Religious Practices 19). The verse shows that fighting should not be the first option of subduing unbelievers, but extremists have gone to the extent of attacking Westerners in the name of religion because they feel targeted by their efforts, such as globalization and foreign intervention.

Islam and the West also have distinct practices in terms of politics and social structures. In several Muslim-led nations, their religion takes center stage when it comes to developing national laws and leadership. A good example can be seen from the Kingdom of the United Arab Emirates, which is still led by a king. Western nations have multiple ethnicities and religions that make it difficult for them to utilize religion as the primary basis for political actions..................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
