Leadership and Management Assignment

One of the main ways of developing the necessary competencies and skills in the field of nursing is shadowing a professional in the healthcare unit. The shadowing experience assists in observing how the leader/practitioner applies different concepts in their daily activities to deliver high quality care. In line with this notion, I embarked on a shadowing experience involving a nurse manager in the cardiac progressive unit in the hospital I am currently posted.

A key ingredient of being a nurse leader is possessing high-level responsibilities within the healthcare organization. Hence, I was required to report as early as 7.00 a.m. to meet with the manager and prepare for the day’s activities. The nurse leader also had to display a high level of professionalism to succeed and empower the interns and other members of the cardiac unit. This style of management ensures that the input from junior nurses is taken into consideration. She also used other key leadership strategies, such as active listening, transparency, emotional intelligence, and asking proper questions.

I observed the nurse leader interacting in an appropriate way with the staff to maintain good and open communications. The nurse leader allowed the junior nurses to ask questions for any clarification. She also evaluated the patient care by checking the quality of care and how the nurses communicated with the patients (Kantanen et al., 2011). Besides, I also observed that the staff in the cardiac unit were organized and there was a duty register stipulating the nurses on day and night shifts. Scheduling was done in the correct manner. The staff had appropriate ways of handing over from one shift to another. According to my observation, the unit was staffed based on the number of patients who were admitted.................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
