The healthcare department faces numerous challenges and breakdowns ranging from ineffective communication, tension among staff, abuse of authority and unrealistic nurse-patient ratios which require up to date management to address them. Specific new roles are therefore integrated into the system to examine and resolve these issues critically. These include: Nurse Navigators, Clinical Nurse Leaders, and Leaders in Patient-Centered Care, whose primary objective is to enhance and expand models and strategies to improve management and leadership with an overall goal of giving patients quality care.

Nurse navigators educate caregivers and patients, and help patients to overcome any barriers in the optimal in the entire healthcare system.  They act as pivot nurses that provide emotional support, promote decision making and establish links to resources. Clinical nurse leaders evaluate patient outcomes, assess risks and make leadership decisions that alter the care plans when necessary. They draft care plans for the patients, lead teams and implement evidence-based practices based on the data collected. The patient-centered method involves empowering the role of nurses to influence other colleagues to improve patient care. The above mentioned new roles focus on the aspects of leadership, teamwork, communication, learning, evidence-based care, and patient-centeredness to influence better patient outcomes.

Leadership in healthcare is essential in addressing quality issues, workforce, safety, chaos, and complexity in work.
