Capital punishment refers to the legal killing of an individual as a way of punishing them for a crime they committed. For decades, there has been a heated debate as to whether capital punishment should be allowed as a way of reducing crime rates (Roy, 2014). Notably, just like the proposers, there are a substantial number of opposes to this form of punishment. The effectiveness of this method of punishment has been reviewed over and over, but still, the debate continues.

A number of factors are taken into consideration when justifying how effective death penalties are in deterring crime in the society. For example, some people choose to consider the moral, welfare of the society, or philosophical factors that come into play as implications of this form of punishment (Roy, 2014). There are several arguments that have been put forth both in support and opposition of this form of punishment.

Individuals who support capital punishment argue that it completely does away with such offenders and denies them the opportunity to commit crimes again (Roy, 2014). Additionally, they also claim that capital justice serves as a fair way to reward justice to the offended family members. Moreover, some of them insist that it is cheaper than life imprisonment.

On the other hand, people who oppose this method of punishment insist that it is not an effective way of preventing a crime. They cite evidences of arrangements to kill witnesses by the offenders as a way of proving that capital punishment contributes to perpetration of more crime (Roy, 2014). To add on to that, they explain that states can make criminals to work after they have been sentenced for life, as a way of reducing expenses for inmates.
