Marijuana Legalization Research Paper

The federal government of the United States still maintains that marijuana should not be legalized in the country. The major reason behind this prohibition relies on the social assumptions that marijuana is not good for individuals’ health with time. There has been overall decline in the number of court filings and arrests related to Marijuana owing to the fact that some states such as California have legalized the use of marijuana (Hao & Cowan , 2019). Marijuana usage in the states that do not condone its use is mainly because of the attributed medical benefits some researchers claim it offers. Some medical researchers opine that marijuana calms those who suffer from muscle pains. Colorado was among the first two states to legalize marijuana usage, although it was recreational use. In the recent past, more states have gone ahead to legalize marijuana usage, and as it seems, many more are yet to follow the same direction.

Legalization of marijuana in some states is exhibiting positive impacts on the safety and health of the public. Notably, the use of marijuana among the youth has been reported to go down. By limiting marijuana access to legal forms, there has been a reduction in the possible harms that arise from use of the drug such as deaths that result of overdose usage (Maier, Mannes, & Koppenhofer, 2017). For example, in Colorado, the deaths of people from drug use reduced by 0.7% while states that have not legalized the drug continued to indicate high number of deaths as a result of the drug overdose. The reduced mortality is linked to responsible use of the drug through legal access. Additionally, the road crash rates in states that have legalized marijuana still continue to remain the same as in those that have not. For example, in Washington, among the first states to legalize marijuana, the number of arrests of drivers under marijuana influence has also declined.............GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
