Native Americans Language Paper

Native Americans were also known as the Indigenous Americans or American Indians. In the United States, they were referred to as semi-independent nations meaning that they lived in societies separated from that of the British settlers. However, in spite of their negative impacts, there are various aspects of culture that have been adopted by Americans like that of food, language, arts, and many others. Therefore, in this paper, I will discuss language as an aspect of culture that Americans borrowed from the Native Americans.

The language of the Americans has been largely shaped by the American Indian words. For instance, many of the words such as caribou, barbecue, hammock hurricane, and chipmunk as well as inventions are from the origin of the Native Americans. Americans have also named their rivers, rivers, and cities from the Native American words. An example of such words is Chinook, Yakima, Ottawa, Pocatello, and many others (Whisnant 34). Americans have also used sign languages that were developed by the Native Americans. Most of the hand signals were developed by the Native Americans to help in their trading activities. This concept is correspondingly used today by the Americans to communicate with the people who cannot speak and who are deaf.

The Americans adoption of language is just a diffusion of culture. It is something that we should all appreciate because, despite the many negative influences of the Native Americans, they helped influence our way of life in a positive way. Through it, we are currently able to communicate effectively with other people for instance when carrying out business activities or with the disabled. Our way of life has hence been made easier with their cultural aspects......................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
