Nursing theories Essay

Nursing theories which were invented by nurses too,  provide and build a framework for registered nurses to be caring, contentious and careful not only when they are on duty handling patients, but also as they go through their everyday life activities. Some good examples of the theories of nursing include the model by Myra Estrin Levine, The conservation model and the principles and practice of nursing by Virginia Henderson which is also known as the need theory. This essay will focus on comparing the concepts, assumptions, implications, and applications of these two nursing theories.

The conservation model and the need theory both share four central concepts: the person who is the patient, the environment, health and nursing (Henderson, 2017). These theories dictate that the nurse should be able to assist the patient in the recovery process and in doing activities that contribute to health and these processes are influenced both by the internal and external environment. Internal environment involves homeostasis while the external environment involves perception, operational and conceptual factors such as language and culture. Both theories further dictate that the primary goal of nursing is to promote health and that nursing involves engaging in interactions with other humans (Henderson, 2017).

Myra’s model assumes that the environment in which healing can take place is created by the nurse and that patients respond predictably while the need theory by Virginia assumes that the healing process is promoted by increasing the patients’ independence as they desire good health and that nurses are willing to devote themselves day and night to the patient (Henderson, 2017). For these reasons, Virginia’s theory marked the difference between medicine and nursing while the conservation model revolutionized nursing into science that focuses on restoring and maintaining the normal anatomy of the body. The conservation theory has its applications in nursing research during data collection, in nursing education as a tool for curriculum development and in nursing practice in different scenarios. On the other hand, the need theory has its applications amongst psychiatrists, psychologists, and nurses who practice in mental health institutions. It also has applications in general nursing practice as it outlines the relationship between the nurse and the patient (Henderson, 2017)....................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
