People state that organic food is natural and does not have chemicals manufactured in industries. However, different cultures have different beliefs as far as various foods go. Organic foods are valued in many cultures of the world especially in the area of promoting good health.
Foodways are economic, social and cultural issues surrounding the consumption and production of food. As mentioned earlier, different beliefs are attached to food in diverse societies. Some cultures attach food to social gatherings. For instance, Muslims attach gather around to share meals and experiences. However, in nations like France, food denotes pleasure whereby people look for dishes they can enjoy (Harper & Makatouni, 2002). Regardless, all the above mentioned cultures believe that organic foods are the best in the maintenance of human health.
Theories are used to explain organic food customs in different cultures. The four humours theory states that blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile must balance in the body to avoid illness. Here, organic food is among the factors that cause the four elements to balance. The four temperaments theory argues that emotions are caused by blood, phlegm, black bile and yellow bile (Hughner et al., 2007). The four elements are altered by organic food to change health and emotional dispositions of different people.
Milk is viewed and used differently in various cultures. In some nations like India where the cow is sacred, milk is a crucial part of culture. Indians drink milk to a large extent since they believe it has good benefits to the wellbeing of a human being (Hughner et al., 2007). On the other hand, in regions like Europe milk is utilized in industrial processes. It undergoes processing to make cheese and butter. Milk is an organic food since it is produced in ways that honor the ecological cycles of the earth.
Different foods play certain roles in cultures of the global domain. For instance, the Chinese hold rice to high cultural status. On the other hand, white meat like turkeys is important in the United States. Turkeys are consumed during thanksgiving holidays. Some religions like Islam do not eat pork since they believe it is cursed. In the Far East, seas foods are a sign of wealth and status. People in the western world favor organic foods because they are deemed healthy. Finally, people like vegetarians believe that eating animals is cruel (Harper & Makatouni, 2002). The overall idea as far as the communities go is that organic foods are important in their cultures.
