Parole and Release to the Community Essay

Parole is the provisional or permanent release of a convict before the completion of their sentence period with the promise of good behavior in the outside world. The main aim of parole is to enable reformed convicts to integrate easily back to the society through good behavior while still in prison. The pros of parole programs are that they give the convicts good motivation while in prison to adopt good behavior as they prepare to get back to society. The cons are that most of these parolees are destined to fail or re-offend if they are not complemented with enough supervision and support hence ending up back in prison.

Some of the ways to improve the parole programs include restructuring the composite of the parole board to ensure that the board members have the required expertise and independence to make release decisions. Also, a mechanism to examine fully the risk assessment tools to determine whether a convict deserves a parole should be put in place. The grounds for release decisions should be reasonable such that a convict will not be denied parole for the reason that they have not served an adequate sentence for punishment purposes (Siegel & Bartollas, 2015). A selective use of supervision should be employed and the period of parole supervision determined by chances of the convict reoffending.

Dome of the barriers that parolees face when they return to the society include rejection and lack of support from their family and the community which causes them to fall into crime again. Difficulties of getting employment by the ex-offenders is also another cause of their failure. Most employers consider employing an ex-convict as a risk that is not worth taking. Finally, society has proved to be unforgiving when it comes to giving ex-convicts a second chance and offering jobs for the ex-offenders............GET AN AFFORDABLE PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
