Pluralism and Religious Diversity Paper

I chose option 1 for this analysis to investigate the concept of pluralism and its role in religious diversity. Throughout history, people have witnessed nations going to war on account of preserving their religion or expanding it to other areas. The Muslims, for instance, termed the battles as a Holy War in which they perceived that it was their duty to spread Islam to different corners of the world among the unbelievers. The Europeans also used religion as a means of colonialism with the understanding that God had called them to spread Christianity among Native tribes. However, in recent decades, sociologists have advanced the notion of pluralism as a means of enabling different religions to co-exist in a multicultural society, such as the United States. The main issue is whether or not pluralism is a threat to faith and the primary reason behind the decline in religious substance. Further, it is essential to investigate the impact of pluralism on the formation of public policies, religious conflict, discrimination, and the survival of religion in America.

Pluralism refers to a system in which two or more groups, states, sources of authority, and principles co-exist. It is a framework that abides by the principles of diversity and acceptance, as well as the common good. It creates the understanding that one religion should not be the sole source of truths, deities, and values, allowing people to accept the practices of other communities. For pluralism to succeed in establishing the common good, the various groups must reach a consensus based on shared values and the ability to compromise (Berger, 2006). The system sounds amazing on paper and in theory, but it is often difficult and impractical to realize in a multicultural community.

The reason that I perceive pluralism to be an integral concept in this course is that it attempts to find a suitable way for different religions to co-exist under one government. For example, the United States comprises of distinct faiths, from Christianity, the Church of Scientology, Judaism, Buddhism, Islam, Confucianism, Taoism, the Native American religion, and so on. ..................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
