Several tenets may be derived from the course reading and other sources. The four principles derived from codes of ethics include transparency, professionalism, accountability, and leadership. Transparency makes it easier for the general public to monitor all the public resources to make sure that they are not misused. Professionalism is a state where professionals follow a given set of rules that governs that particular career in carrying out their functions. Accountability makes it easier to audit the resources owned by the government or the nonprofit organizations and thus eliminate corruption and the misuse of funds. Leadership is critical to the code of ethics as it makes it easier for the staff of an organization to direct the team towards the achievement of the set goals and objectives (Lawton, 2015). Some challenges arise when complying with the code of ethics, such as corruption by some public administrators in the government sector and thus making it hard for the organization to achieve the principles of accountability and transparency. For the principle of professionalism to serve the public entirely, the professionals should have well-written guidelines on how they should carry out their functions including the consequences of misconduct.
The above tenets are fundamental to a public administrator since they makes it easier for them to serve the public and thus meet the set organizational goals. The codes of ethics also makes sure that the governmental resources are used for the right purpose to serve the general public. There are situations where these principles may be eliminated, such as when the reputation of the organization is at stake (Broad, 2014). For example, professionalism may be reduced to protect the organization. Transparency and accountability are deontological ethics, and thus they should never be eliminated because they always protect the organization.
