Racial Profiling Essay
Racial Profiling Assignment
The phrase ‘racial profiling,’ especially to the people of color, conjures up— indeed dredges up— stories, reactions, and statements that paint despicable and traumatizing images of discriminatory actions against the backdrop racial animosity. Harris (2017) defines racial profiling as “any police-initiated action that relies on racial or ethnic appearance as one factor among others, rather than the behavior of an individual or information, resulting in police actions such as questioning, stop-and-frisk, or searches for purposes of criminal, national-security or anti-terrorism, or immigration investigation” (p.120). Racial profiling is undeniable real and measurable phenomenon that inflict real harm to the victims. It is not just a disturbing issue to the Africa-Americans and other people of color, who are major victims of the vice, rather it is a matter of concern to every citizen that cares about, and seek to uphold, the American value of human rights, justice, fairness, and public order to everyone.
Proponents of racial profiling are deficient of racial consciousness— the capacity to understand and accept difference between a person’s culture, history, and physical appearance. According to Lever 2017), racial profiling is one of the consequence of racial animosity, which occurs when different races or ethnicities live in a common geographical area. Ideally, racial consciousness is main pillar of cultural diversity— integration of different cultures— in an egalitarian society. Scholars have established that racism is a social construct, not biological, albeit with a historical perspective. This paper provides an overview on the concept of racial profiling as a nagging issue in the United States. The paper lodges a claim that policies as currently constituted in criminal justice system are not adequate to eradicate racial profiling, if anything it abets the vice............GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
