Venice, like many other great empires, was not immune to the cycle of life. The rise and fall so to speak. Gradually, over centuries, it obtained power, wealth and influence through prudent political policy. It used its location between Constantinople and the Byzantine empire to become a wealthy middleman of sorts. Its access to the waterways and the strategic establishment of bases of operation along trade routes made it a trade juggernaut (Norwich 1981[1],93). The bureaucratic approach of signing treaties and offering subsidies as opposed to bulldozing its way through obstacles caused the city-state to gain favor. Venice appeared to have found the winning formula. Focusing on its strong suits. A strong well-organized naval force. Diplomatic suave. Advantageous geographical location. However, the winds of change would blow. Along with the wind went Venice favor. It changed diplomatic tact. Once optimal geographical location would become a hindrance. Its naval force would become neglected and obsolete. In a sense, Venice was the author of its own demise.

Venice as an island state relied on its natural defenses to protect it from attacks by rivals. It was separated from the mainland by a waterway on one side while lagoons and thick forests protected it from the other. Venetian leaders were satisfied with these natural defenses, only making efforts to reinforce them. The ability to remain unattached to the politics of the mainland enabled Venice to direct its focus on more lucrative trade ventures. Signing treaties on essential trade routes.
