Rock and Roll Argumentative Essay

 

As Glenn revealed in his book, "All Shook Up", the introduction of rock and roll brought about various changes during the 1950's in the United States. It was a decade the country had experienced a huge struggle finding the people who should control the popular culture. The rise of Rock n' Roll also accorded with the Civil Rights movement but it eventually changed and challenged the culture of the Americans. This paper, therefore, explains the role of Rock n' Roll played in challenging racial boundaries in the 1950's.

First, Rock and Roll challenged racial boundaries by attracting the attention of both the black as well as the white Americans. In spite of the fact that the music was sung by the African-American artists, the citizens appreciated it.  Leo Mintz also went ahead to showcase the music on his radio show. As a result, most of the whites and blacks both in the suburbs and the cities found themselves responding enthusiastically to the Rock and Roll music. This, therefore, was a way the music tried to end the cultural problems that existed during that period (Altschuler 21).

Rock and Roll also help challenge the existing racial boundaries in the 1950's by enabling blacks to identify their rights as citizens of the United States. It was during that period where African Americans were encouraged to demonstrate on the streets to demand racial equality. It is because the blacks were tired of being discriminated as illustrated in the book, “Negros don’t want to be Negroes anymore” (Altschuler 42). They were hence motivated by the music and within a short period of time, the action was taken to the whites who were found abusing the rights of the blacks. For instance, in 1956, the Supreme Court stroke down the discrimination that existed when using public transportation (Altschuler 36).
