Rock’s Dark Ages Essay
According to rock historians, the period between 1959 and 1963 is considered the Dark Ages of Rock because the rebellious and wild rockers were being replaced by polite and wholesome teens who were considered professionals. Some of the artists during this time include Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Buddy Holly and Little Richard among others (Aquila, 2000). Styled songwriters erupted combined with serious label executives who spearheaded made-to-order product lines such as novelty songs, teen idols, instrumentals and girl groups all for teen consumption.
In this period, Rock and Roll were dying because it was losing its authenticity and the consumers were moving to soul music without their knowledge. Some of the widely known and respected rock artists killed around this time such as Big Popper, Holly and Valens while others who had scandals had their careers ended, and others derailed around the same time (Covach & Flory, 2006). With those setbacks, deaths and breakups, Rock music was headed to its demise. The death of Rock music would make parents happy because they had a feeling that the rock-stars of the time were instilling bad morals on their teenagers. The professional artists made songs that appeared well tamed; attracted the audience of all groups regardless of age (Aquila, 2000). The wide acceptance of music after the crisis of Rock and Roll appeared as the genre had died.
Between 1959 and 1953, Rock music was bowing out as clean music was setting in thus can be referred to as the dark ages of rock. It was not an era of creativity because what the artists did was to correct the mistakes made by their predecessors. New artists chose to create clean lyrics that were acceptable in the society as morally upright.
