Secession and the Civil War Assignment
Secession and the Civil War :President Lincoln’s
President Lincoln’s first inaugural address focuses on the secession of the Southern states to form the Confederacy as a way of expressing their disapproval over the issue of abolishing slavery, and implores the states to resolve the matter to avoid conflict and military action from the government. The first inaugural address delivered by President Lincoln in 1861 captures the tension that was taking place in the United States before the emergence of the Civil War. The American leaders were determined not to make any policy statements that would anger both sides, that is, the Southern and Northern states (Lincoln 360). It is for this reason that Lincoln pleads with the two sides to resolve their differences without secession. He also warns the Southern States that seeking to separate themselves from the Union is a sign of anarchy, something that he cannot take kindly as the President of the United States.
It is evident from the address that the United States was at the brink of starting the Civil War. President Lincoln argues that the Union cannot be dissolved because it is the original government. He highlights that the Union is older than the American Constitution; hence, it should be preserved. Lincoln also supports the Northern states and their decision to champion for the freedom of the slaves, which went against his initial statement to support the decision of either side regarding slavery if appointed as president (Lincoln 361). How did Lincoln defend the Northern states and their stand on democracy in the address? The historical document identifies that the American leaders were aware of the possibility of a war taking place between the Southern and Northern states.......GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
