Some of the typical symptoms of employee's discontent when dissatisfaction has not been expressed include frustration, absenteeism, hostility, inattention to duty, excessive tardiness, and a general deterioration in performance (Iannone, Iannone, & Bernstein, 2013). Other symptoms according to Iannone, Iannone, and Bernstein (2013), including loss of morale, inattention to duty, indifference to job requirements, and lack of motivation.

 One of the most common symptoms of employee discontent with their work is absenteeism. When employees are not contented with their work or are dissatisfied, they will usually show signs of lateness to work or total absenteeism (DeMers, 2016). These symptoms indicate that the employee is no longer interested in working for the organization. The dissatisfaction may result from factors such as poor pay or frustrations with the workplace. Hence, the first sign of dissatisfaction that supervisors should look out for in their supervision is absenteeism of their employees.

Furthermore, discontentment and dissatisfaction with work can also be manifested in the form of hostility to supervisors and other employees. The hostility may be manifested in form of inability to work in peace with other employee and the tendency to pick up fights with other employees. Also, hostility among personnel may be portrayed by employees through signs of being unable to work in harmony with other employees. The hostility may have the effect of preventing employees from engaging in positive conversations with other employees.

Also, employees usually show discontent for their work by exhibiting a general deterioration in performance of their work. Their morale may also go down as a result of the discontentment with their work. Hence, supervisors should always look out for a general drop in the performance of certain employees as this may be a sure sign that the personnel is not contented with their work.  Poor performance and lose of moral are thus symptoms of employee discontentment since they indicate that the employee is losing interest in their job.
