The concepts of management and leadership are mostly confusing to people. However, they are different since management entails controlling people whereas leadership refers to offering guidance. In the nursing sector, leadership and management are important concepts. They have differences as well as similarities. Leadership and management can be combined to ensure that a person plays the role of a manager and leader simultaneously.

Leadership and management differ from one another. As mentioned earlier, management involves the issue of controlling people. However, leadership denotes the idea of providing guidance to people within an organization (O’neill, 2013). Hence, management has a lot to do with status whereas leadership sees a powerful person work with people hand in hand. The goals of the two concepts overlap in some instances.

Firstly, the goals of leadership and management focus on working with people. They put their attention on workers within an organization. The goals of the ideas focus on the improvement of the dispositions of different organizations (Tomey, 2008). The ideas ensure that the issue of influencing people is featured in different settings. As a nurse leader, I believe that I can take advantage of the overlap to create change.

I can take advantage of the overlap to play the roles of manager and leader at the same time. Here, I can ensure that I give orders to be followed by every stakeholder. Secondly, I can ensure that I involve myself with the work conducted by the people under my leadership. The idea can ensure that I gain a reputation of working closely with people as well as monitoring their activities (O’neill, 2013). The combination can see the objectives of my institution achieved to the maximum.

Leadership and management are different concepts. However, they exhibit some similarities in different ways. Their goals overlap in some instances since they intend to achieve similar objectives. A nursing leader can take advantage of the overlap to include the role of manager as well.
