The Concordat of 1801 Paper

The Concordat of 1801 involved Pope Pius VII and Napoleon. It promoted the freedom of worship and recognized Catholic, Apostolic, and Roman religions to be practiced in France as long as they did not affect the peace of the public (Gomez-Rivera III 11). In addition, it was necessary that an agreement should take place because the Church was experiencing a problem of its land being grabbed. Through the Concordant, the Pope did not oppose taking of the church land, instead the government pledged to pay church leaders such as bishops. The agreement did not restore back land initially owned by the church that was grabbed. The country ensured more peasants had enough land.

Despite the fact that the Church gained some power from the agreement, it benefitted the state more. Napoleon retained more power over the church and could appoint church bishops (Gomez-Rivera III 12). Moreover, the pope’s control over the bishop were limited because Napoleon included the “Organic Articles” in the agreement. In effect the Napoleon was in more control of the country than the papacy was. The government through this agreement retained much power even to control church issues.

The Concordant favored the government in many ways. Although it allowed the church to worship in the public freely, it restricted its powers. The Church also lost power to claim its land because the government offered to remunerate the bishops (Gomez-Rivera III 13). Napoleon had the intention to regain more control of his country and therefore, chose a utilitarian approach by which he benefitted more. He got the powers to appoint the church bishops and was more in charge of the country. The government also controlled other activities of the church such as how they worshipped in public. They Church was provided with guidelines of worship to maintain public peace....................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
