The Enemy Within Essay

As the US  grapples with global terror,  a new phenomenon of home-grown terrorism has emerged whereby American citizens are increasingly being radicalized by terrorist organizations both offline and online to commit acts of terrorism against the homeland. Radicalization refers to a phenomenon involving a choice or persuasion of American citizens or permanent resident aliens to carry out terrorist activities within the US jurisdiction on behalf of American enemies. Radicalization usually takes place in stages and the internet and the media play a major role in the radicalization process.

The main stages involved in the radicalization of homegrown terrorists include pre-radicalization, self-identification, indoctrination, and Jihadization (Silber & Bhatt, 2007). During the pre-radicalization stage, an individual is first adopted and exposed to the ideology of jihadi-Salafi Islam. The self-identification phase of radicalization is a stage whereby one who has been influenced by both external and internal factors starts exploring  Islamic extremism, slowly graduates from their old identity, and starts to associate with people who share similar ideologies about Islam as them. Here, there are several factors which act as catalysts for the transformation of an individual from a normal person to an extremist. These factors include personal factors such as the death of a close family, social factors such as racism, discrimination, or alienation, economic factors such as bloced mobility or losing a job, and political factors such as international conflicts (Silber & Bhatt, 2007).

During the indoctrination stage, one's beliefs In Islam and religious extremism is intensified and they fully adopt the ideology of Jihadi-Salafi. At this stage, there is intense reinforcement and encouragement of radical views. The jihadization stage is a phase whereby the radicalized individuals take on the duty or responsibility of participating in jihad or holy war against all those perceived as enemies of Islam. They also tend to engage in self- designation as mujahedeen ............GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
