Japan is among the most successful nations in Asia and the world. It is led by a monarchy whereby it elects prime ministers. Its monarchy is pre modern and it precedes the modern forms of government. The Japanese monarchy is older that the British system of kingship. However, the Japanese monarchy is rarely recognized as pre modern which is a contentious issue. The Japanese monarchy is part of the nation’s traditions and it was central to her political modernity.

Michael Foucault shared views regarding the disciplinary regime of power. According to him, it comes out that discipline is simply a component of power. Therefore, power can be exercised without necessarily having institutions like prisons and army barracks that control people.[1] Fujitani is an author who relies on Michael Foucault’s ideology of the disciplinary regime of power. He uses the concept to prove that the Japanese monarchy was central to Japan’s political modernity. Therefore, the modern political system of Japan was not copied from the western world.

The author shows that Japan did not have traditional systems of control like Jails or hospitals. However, the monarchy led Japan and inspired the nation to continue improving her society. It comes out that the British monarchy is seen as the epitome of monarchy in the world. However, its modern system was developed in the 1870s and 1914. The Japanese monarchy existed before then showing that her system was part of the traditions. Therefore, the Japanese did not rely on the British to develop her society’s political system.
