The Lessons of Easter Island Paper

The Easter Islanders mainly utilized vegetation, water, and trees. They required the water and vegetation to support the growing population, which reached a peak of 7000 in the year 1550 (Ponting 6). The island did not have streams or rivers aside from those that came from the four dormant volcanoes. When the population increased, the trees were cut down to provide clearings and materials for building houses and canoes for fishing. By the end of the 16th century, the civilization of the Easter Islanders collapsed due to the misuse of natural resources.

The land was treeless and the supply of fish and water had reduced drastically compared to the growing population. Deforestation led to the collapse of civilization, proving that trees and vegetation are essential in maintaining the cycle of life. They provide homes for animals, food to eat, shade, rainfall, and prevent global warming and soil erosion. The decline of resources resulted in conflicts and permanent warfare (Ponting 6). Slavery and cannibalism became the norm, and ultimately only a few people with no knowledge of their glorious past were left on Easter Island.

Over the centuries, people have turned to cutting down trees to clear the ground for their homes and the growing population. Trees are also vital commodities in the industrial sector since they provide timber to make charcoal, furniture, houses, and other items (Earth Day Network). As a result, forests have been cleared at a high rate to build the latest and most advanced settlements and create massive business empires.................GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
