The Spartan and Athenian civilizations were found in Greece during the ancient times. They had similarities and differences as well. The Kingdoms valued the progress of their respective societies. Training was a serious affair that was focused upon to great lengths. The ancient Athenians valued education for information while the Spartans concentrated on military training.

The purpose of education brings out the differences between Athenians and Spartans. The Spartan civilization valued military training. Their education was focused upon the production of soldier citizens. They trained children from an early age on the way to become tough soldiers. On the other hand, Athenians admired an education system that would make people knowledgeable and peaceful (Gutek 75). The civilizations had certain similarities. Firstly, they trained children from an early age. Secondly, there existed programs to ensure that children underwent training.

The education systems of the two civilizations compare to the ones in the contemporary society. It comes out that the modern education system is similar to the Athenian one. People are taught on the importance of peace and harmony when it comes to nation building. The modern education system also teaches elements of self –defense in military institutions (Gutek 75). The Spartan and Athenian education systems trained children from an early age. Similarly, the modern education system trains children from the time they are young.

The Athenian and Spartan education systems valued training. Their societies experienced advancement due to the training given to its citizens. The Spartans valued military training just like the modern societies.
