Unequal Childhood Assignment
Unequal Childhood Question and Answer
- Explain using direct quotations the difference between natural growth and concerted cultivation.
Concerted and cultivation and natural growth are styles of rearing children in different homes. Concerted cultivation is associated with children from middle class homes whereas natural growth comes with working class individuals. Concerted cultivation involves a situation whereby middle class families concentrate in the development of their children’s talents and abilities. Lareau (2011), states that “organized activities controlled by mothers and fathers, dominate the lives of middle-class children” (P. 400). In some instances, the children may become entitled. The reason is because they might fail to understand the importance of working diligently to achieve a result. On the other hand, natural growth involves a situation where siblings grow together engaging in household activities. It is evident that parents who apply concerted cultivation engage in arguments with their children since they believe in the latter’s reasoning. On the other hand, parents that engage in natural growth rearing of children do not welcome questioning. The parents do not believe in the opinion of their children and they engage in corporal punishment to maintain discipline.
- Again, using direct quotes, describe your own childhood within her frames of reference. What do you think is to be gained and lost by being raised with concerted cultivation or natural growth?
The concerted cultivation method of rearing children has advantages and disadvantages. It comes out that children raised in this manner acquire crucial skills that assist them in their growth process. In my life, I gained skills like playing the piano, swimming and the art of excellent communication. The skills I gained helped me in the job market. Lareau (2011), argues that “employees have less than one minute to make a good impression” (P. 403). The idea explains why children from middle class backgrounds have a big advantage when it comes to the job market. Their home training proves important since it helps them communicate with confidence and maintain eye contact at all times. Children from low income homes come from backgrounds where looking people in the eyes can be a sign of disrespect (Lareau, 2011). However there were downsides like stress because of pressure to perform. As per natural growth, it ensures that children are not overburdened with scheduled activities. Here, they have free time to interact with other people in the neighborhood. However, the children often find themselves severely unprepared to handle their adult responsibilities..............GET A PLAGIARISM FREE COPY
