The Voting and election laws in America have undergone a lot of evolution. Many changes have been added to the laws since their enactment. In the early 20th century, non-citizens were granted the right to cast votes in national elections. As per the current regulations, non-citizen residents of America are not eligible to participate in any elections of the country. This has resulted on contentions concerning whether long-term immigrants should be allowed to take part in the politics and the electoral process in the country. Majority of non-citizens experience poor living conditions because they lack voice in the laws that govern them. America is a country with many immigrants compared to many countries in the world. Non-citizens face a lot of challenges in the country, especially related to their areas of residence. The political system majorly overlooks of them and this has deteriorated their plight in the country. Voting and elections by immigrants still remain contentious in the United States.
One can become a citizen of the United States by birth or through naturalization. Doing well in both English tests as well as civics tests are requirements for one to earn the citizenship through naturalization. The civics test includes tests concerning the American government and integrated civics (Meszaros, 2017). English tests are made of oral and reading tests. Consequently, it is difficult for many people to gain the citizens of the United States of America. Citizenship comes with responsibility in as much as there are guaranteed rights (Times Editorial Borad, 2014).
A legal permission to live in a country is not reason enough to gain citizenship. Even though citizenship is an important factor for one to be allowed to take part in elections and voting, it is important to look into the solutions of problems related to politics that are facing noncitizens.
