The author of the article “Why are we still teaching reading the wrong way” argues that the learners get no teaching on how to read in line with the discoveries of the scientists, which guide how children should read and learn (Hanford, 2018).  The teacher preparation programs do not put into consideration the science behind establishing a reading culture. According to information provided by the National Assessment of Educational Progress, a good number of students especially in fourth grade are not in a position to read proficiently. It is clear that research conducted in classrooms show that children can learn how to read if the approaches employed in reading take into consideration the discoveries made by scientist  as well as understanding brain functioning.

It is very crucial to underscore the fact that majority of the teachers do not comprehend the science behind reading. Learning to read does not take place merely because people who read surround the children just like when learning the art of talking.  Phonics instruction form critical aspect of reading. It is disappointing to know that teachers continue to teach ways of reading the wrong in an attempt to avoid bad reading habits (Hanford, 2018). The teachers have a wrong view about who children get to develop the culture of becoming proficient readers. Some teachers think that children become readers if they have access to interesting books. Children do not become avid readers naturally by just accessing books. The ideas of whole language were do not stand on the basis that there is no reliable explanation of how children read.
